Society is placing increasing demands on a strong, reliable, and fast mobile network. To prepare for future needs, the 2G network will be shut down. If you have a 2G-only device, you will need to replace it before the shutdown to continue making calls and sending messages.

What does the 2G closing mean for me?

If you’ve received a notification from us about replacing an older device, it means you might be using a device, such as a mobile phone, that only supports 2G. Once the 2G network is shut down, you will no longer be able to call or text using that device.

If you already have, or have switched to, a mobile phone or equipment that supports 4G/5G and VoLTE (voice over 4G), you won’t notice any changes. Telia’s 5G network is available to 9 out of 10 Norwegians, and the 4G network is well established across the country.

What do I need to do?

Switch to voice over 4G or 5G, or upgrade your equipment. If your device only supports 2G, you must replace it to continue using your phone for calling and texting.

It is also possible to manually lock a phone to only use 2G, even if it supports newer networks. If you’ve done this, you’ll need to change your phone’s settings to connect to 4G or 5G instead. Check your phone’s user guide for instructions or contact us for assistance.

My phone supports VoLTE, but I was still notified
You need to enable VoLTE/4G calling in your phone settings. If you don’t see the option on your phone, it means your device doesn’t support 4G calling, and you’ll need to switch to one that does.

When is the 2G network closing in my area?

Telia begun closing the 2G network in August 2025 and plans to complete the process by the end of 2025. Even if the closing doesn’t affect your area right away, we recommend replacing your device as soon as possible.

If you travel to an area where 2G is no longer available, you will not be able to call or send messages using a 2G-only device.

Schedule for 2G network shutdown:

  • August: Buskerud (excluding Drammen) and southwestern parts of Innlandet (1)
  • September: Telemark, Agder, southern parts of Rogaland (2), as well as northern parts of Vestland and southwestern Møre og Romsdal (3)
  • October: Trøndelag and northeastern Møre og Romsdal (4), along with Nordland, Troms, Finnmark, and Svalbard (5)
  • November: Central and northern parts of Rogaland, southwestern Vestland (6), as well as Innlandet and northeastern Akershus (7)
  • December: Oslo, Drammen area, Vestfold, Østfold, and the rest of Akershus (8)
